Calling Early Years Community Stars

The search is back on to find Bradford’s ‘Community Stars’ working with pregnant families or families with children under four.

For the second year, Better Start Bradford has teamed up with the Telegraph & Argus Community Stars Awards to present the ‘Early Years’ Community Star Award category, which recognises volunteers who go the extra mile working with families in the Better Start Bradford area (Little Horton, Bowling and Barkerend, and Bradford Moor wards).

Better Start Bradford is appealing to families, community leaders and professionals to nominate now, to show local early years volunteers how much their work is appreciated and valued.

Nominations must be made by 25 September 2017.

The Early Years Community Star Award category, sponsored by Better Start Bradford, is for a person or group:

  • Championing support to expectant parents and families with children under four, and encouraging others to get involved.
  • Volunteering in the Better Start Bradford area of Little Horton, Bowling and Barkerend and Bradford Moor, although they don’t have to be working with Better Start Bradford projects.
  • Demonstrating enthusiasm, innovation, passion and a can-do attitude.

A shortlist will be announced in November for public voting, with the awards then presented to the winners at the Community Stars Awards ceremony at Midland Hotel on 6 December. The Community Stars Awards are in partnership with Bradford Council and the community campaign ‘People Can Make a Difference’.

Michaela Howell, Programme Director, Better Start Bradford, says: “Many of the Better Start Bradford family of projects rely on the support of our amazing community volunteers. Our volunteers play such an important role in engaging and supporting families and working alongside us to ensure our children have the best possible start in life.

“By sponsoring the ‘Early Years’ category of the Community Stars awards, this our way of saying thank you to those volunteers who selflessly give their expertise, skills and time to support those in need. We are encouraging families and family workers across our part of Bradford to nominate their Community Star now.”

Last year’s winner, Salhia Ahmed, who supports pregnant parents in the last six weeks of pregnancy with Bradford Doulas, said: “I am so thrilled to receive this award. For me it is an honour to help women through a big stage in their lives.”
