Home-Start Better Start

Home-Start Better Start

Providing support, friendship and practical help to families with children aged under four and during pregnancy.

Home-Start Better Start is available to support families living in the Better Start Bradford area from pregnancy, or where there is a child in the family aged under four.

Being a parent of young children can be challenging. Couple this with the demands of daily living it’s no wonder that we need help from time to time. Home-Start Better Start can help families through these difficult times with support from our volunteer peer supporters. Our peer supporters know what it’s like to be a parent and care about helping families live happier lives by offering:

  • Understanding that when bringing up children, problems are not unusual
  • Reassurance that you are not alone
  • A listening ear and a shoulder to cry on
  • An extra pair of hands to help you cope with everyday situations
  • Practical help with activities like playing or story time
  • Friendly support through difficult times for as long as you need support

Home-Start Better Start supports families according to their needs and situation through listening, emotional and practical support and linking in with other specialist services and Children Centres.

The project provides:

  • an initial visit by the project coordinator
  • home visits by a trained peer supporter
  • informal support networks
  • referral to other relevant services if other support is needed

Who will benefit? Families in the Better Start Bradford area from pregnancy, or where there is a child in the family aged under four, where they require extra support with the demands of daily family life or during difficult times.

Where and when is it delivered? Most support is in the home but peer supporters may also accompany participants to group sessions at local venues, or where families feel comfortable. Support is tailored according to families’ needs.

Who provides it? This project is delivered by Home-Start Bradford District, a charity with much experience delivering this work, working in partnership with Better Start Bradford.

How do families register? If you are a parent with a child under four, and are finding things tough at the moment, you can ask for free help by contacting Home-Start Better Start on [email protected] or 01274 666711. Families can also be referred by their midwife, doctor, health visitor, early years staff, social care, children’s centre or voluntary and community sector organisations.
